Welcome to Manila. Considered to be one if not the most densely populated city on the planet, imagine more than a hundred thousand people living per square mile, there’s no way to go but up. High-rise buildings continue to rise. But for those who can’t afford, made-up shelter is the option. The result: Skyscrapers are everywhere, and so are crowded slums.
In September of 2017, the city is listed as one of the ten most stressful cities in the world. One month later, Manila was rated as one of the most unsafe cities to live in. Another month later, the city was awarded the worst place to be a driver.
Manila. You may call it ‘The Pearl of the Orient’, while some dub it ‘The Gates of Hell’. It’s beautiful and ugly. Experience the charm beyond the chaos. Photo taken from Malibay, Pasay City, shows shanties against a backdrop of towering skyscrapers of Makati Central Business District.
